| Pre-Raphaelite is my favorite genre of art, with it's romantic and sensual appeal and accent on classical mythology. The Pre-Raphaelite movement began in the mid 1800's and ended in the 1920's. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti,
William Michael Rossetti,
William Holman Hunt,
Thomas Woolner,
Frederic George Stephens,
James Collinson, and
John Everett Millais. These artists sought to rediscover the art of the Italian masters before the time of Raphael (which is why the movement is called Pre-Raphaelite).
My favorite artists of this period are Dante Gabriel Rossetti and several others who were influenced by the Brotherhood including, J.W. Waterhouse and Edward Burne-Jones. Click the links below to see some of their artwork. |
